About Us

Our Story

26 Years ago, my wife needed a frame for one of her paintings. After looking through the timber behind the shed, I found some pieces for the frame and went to make one. I only had a hand saw and my arm nearly fell off with the effort but the result was pretty good. The picture was framed. Gabrielle loved it.  When friends saw it, the positive comments inspired us to make some more.

Our business was born!

A business that gives job satisfaction and allows us to express our creative sides. We began to make handcrafted products out of recycled, environmentally friendly materials. We have always been conscious of treading lightly upon the earth, and try to give back to mother nature where possible. A big vege garden was fed with compost and saw dust from the workshop. It is very satisfying to use recycled timbers and create something that is uniquely Australian, practical and beautiful. Our aim is to create a product that lasts. Perhaps they can even be handed down through generations. We live our modern lives with mass consumerism and cheap imported products. They break and are just thrown away. We have found our frames to be still used and valued after 25 years or more. They are quite a unique product.

The timbers we use are often more than 60 years old. They are salvaged from old buildings, in and around Sydney and the Southern Highlands, NSW, where we live.

When we started, we were making picture frames in a single garage using a hand saw. Gradually, the photo frames developed into our popular bigger multiple opening frames. This didn’t happen overnight. I wonder if the customer will buy "this" , was the question we were always exploring.

We  currently sell though our web site and social media. We have a small display of our recycled timber photo frames near our workshop in Balmoral Village , Southern Highlands, NSW. You can come and visit and purchase a frame of your choice but we are only available with an appointment. It is too hard to use noisy machinery while being covered in saw dust and chat to a customer; all at the same time!

We are continually adding beautiful new designs and are always making custom designs for customers.

Custom Framing is a big part of our business. We handcraft custom made frames for artwork, textiles, prints, and make box frames as well. At Wombat Frames, we understand the value of quality, attention to detail and finish. We offer corporate framing solutions and custom framing to suit your individual needs. We have framed up entire art collections and framed for exhibitions. We have supplied frames in large numbers for motels, environmental education buildings, architects, corporate, local and state government departments, shops. You name it, we'll frame it. There is no order too small, or too large. Please contact us via the website or email us. They are all hand made here in the Southern Highlands, NSW, Australia.

Today you can find us not only on this website, but also on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.
